What Are Dolch Sight Words?
Dolch sight words are a set of high-frequency words that young readers need to recognize instantly to develop strong reading fluency. These words, compiled by Dr. Edward William Dolch in the 1930s-40s, make up 50-75% of all words found in children’s books. Since many of them cannot be easily sounded out, children must memorize them by sight.
The Dolch sight words list is divided into five levels based on grade levels:
- Pre-K (Pre-Primer)
- Kindergarten (Primer)
- 1st Grade
- 2nd Grade
- 3rd Grade
These words help children build confidence in reading by reducing the need to stop and decode frequently used words.
